Residential Rates
MGE takes responsibility to provide safe and reliable electricity and natural gas service at reasonable rates. The Public Service Commission of Wisconsin (PSCW) regulates MGE’s business and sets rates.
We take seriously our responsibility to control costs. We recognize the economic downturn has been difficult for many of our customers, which is why MGE cut costs from its budgets before applying to the PSCW for 2010 rate changes. MGE:
- Delayed some projects.
- Spread some costs over longer time periods.
- Froze officer salaries.
- Held the line on other expenses.
The PSCW approved our costs for:
- New transmission lines to maintain electric reliability in Dane County and to bring clean, renewable energy to our area.
- MGE’s portion of the cost for the Oak Creek Power Plant expansion that will supply base load power to meet our area’s energy needs.
New prices are effective Jan. 1, 2010.
Electricity
Electric rates have increased 3.3%. A typical residential customer using 550 kWh per month will see a monthly bill increase of about $1.92 for electric service.
Natural Gas
Natural gas rates have decreased. A typical residential customer will see a decrease of about 46 cents per month. Natural gas distribution service rates cover gas system maintenance and the costs to deliver safe and reliable gas to customers’ homes. The distribution rate is the regulated component of your natural gas rate and is independent of gas supply prices which fluctuate based on market conditions.
Control your use
You can’t control the price of energy, but you can control your use of it. Track your energy use online and follow these energy-saving tips.
