Electric Vehicle Charging Research

MGE is studying electric vehicle (EV) charging:

  • At public charging stations.
  • In customers' homes.

The information MGE gathers will help MGE plan how to support the future energy needs of electric vehicle use in our area.

See Drive Change video about our project at: http://www.storybridge.tv/greenview/drivechange

MGE Public Charging Network
Any electric vehicle (EV) owner who regularly drives a plug-in electric vehicle in MGE's electric service area can join our network:

  • Agree to terms or participation.
  • Pay $40 refundable deposit.
  • Receive a secure access card.
  • Use MGE's charging stations free of charge during the study.

Home-based EV Charging
MGE will monitor the electric consumption of MGE electric customer volunteers who charge their electric vehicles at home to learn:

  • When customers charge their vehicles.
  • Length of charging sessions.
  • Electricity used for vehicle charging.
  • How charging use fits with other home electricity use.

To volunteer
I own an electric vehicle and want to participate in MGE's research project.

Background
While there are currently very few plug-in electric vehicles requiring grid charging in the Madison area, use of electric vehicles will eventually impact electric utilities and the infrastructure to provide electricity to customers. This project will help us understand:

  • How this infrastructure could work.
  • How consumers will want to use public charging stations.
  • Driving and charging patterns.
  • How it impacts our electric distribution system.
  • Interconnection with the electricity grid.

Charging equipment technology
Distributed by Carbon Day Automotive in Chicago, the charging stations MGE is using are manufactured by Coulomb Technologies, Inc., a U.S.-based company located in California.
